Join us in acknowledging famous Hispanic inventor Ellen Ochoa, the world’s first female Hispanic astronaut! Ms. Ochoa invented an optical analysis system for information processing, in particular for detecting defects in a repeating pattern. She is also a co-inventor on three patents for an optical inspection system, an optical object recognition method and a method for noise removal in images.
She led a research group at NASA focused on automated space exploration, and as Chief of the Intelligent Systems Technology Branch at NASA, she supervised several scientists and engineers in the research and development of computational systems for aerospace missions. She is the current Director of the Johnson Space Center, and in 1993 went on a nine-day space mission aboard the shuttle Discovery.
