Isi (pr. “Izzy”) Caulder is a partner with Bereskin & Parr LLP and member of the Electrical & Computer Technology practice group. Isi is the co-leader of the Artificial Intelligence (AI) practice group and the leader of the Cleantech practice group.
Isi guides technology companies through the process of strategically developing, managing and monetizing their IP rights in North America and worldwide. She has extensive experience in drafting, filing and successfully prosecuting patent and industrial design applications for clients as well as providing patent validity, infringement and freedom to operate opinions. She builds valuable patent assets for clients in a wide variety of electrical and computer based technologies including artificial intelligence software, image processing software, video streaming technology, satellite communication hardware, mobile communications equipment and software, data encryption and compression software, oil and gas equipment, solar and wind power equipment, carbon emission reduction technology, medical devices, wearable technology, and electronic consumer products.
Isi is a frequent author of articles on patents, industrial designs and IP law generally and a regular speaker at local and international conferences, seminars and technology-related events.
Isi is a dedicated supporter of the Toronto technology community. For example, she mentors teams and individuals at The Entrepreneurship Hatchery at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Toronto, at the Biomedical Zone and iBoost Zone at Ryerson and through AGE-WELL. She is an involved Board Member on the University of Toronto Engineering Alumni Network (EAN) Executive Board and the University of Toronto Engineering Alumni Awards Committee. Isi also serves on the Leadership Team for the newly launched ChIPS Toronto Chapter, the first in Canada.
Isi is actively engaged with international IP associations that shape the profession. At the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA), she plans and coordinates Annual and Spring conference programs, is a President-appointed member of the Special Committee for Membership, Chair of the International Inclusion Committee on the AIPLA Professional Programs Committee, and was Co-Chair of the AIPLA Mid-Winter Institute 2018. She is an active member of the AIPLA International and Foreign Law and Electronic and Computer Law Committees and the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada’s (IPIC) Annual Conference Committee. Isi is currently elected to serve on the Ontario Bar Association (OBA) Information Technology and Intellectual Property Law Committee Executive.
Prior to joining Bereskin & Parr LLP, she graduated with honours from the University of Toronto’s Engineering Science program (Electrical Option), obtained a NSERC graduate scholarship and Master’s degree in the field of algebraic control systems and worked briefly in the power engineering and telecommunications fields. While in law school at the University of Toronto, Isi was awarded the McCarthy Tetrault Prize for academic excellence as well as the Bereskin & Parr Prize in Intellectual Property.
