Brigitte Chan is a partner with Bereskin & Parr LLP and head of the firm's Montréal office. Brigitte counsels clients in trademark clearance, prosecution, licensing and enforcement, as well as in industrial design, copyright, domain name and related Internet matters. Her practice includes portfolio management of Canadian and international companies, both on a domestic and international level. She provides clients with legal advice and regularly participates in strategic decisions, including brand audits and IP acquisitions.
Brigitte has been involved in reported decisions rendered by the Federal courts in both patent and trademark litigation, and has appeared before the Trademarks Opposition Board. She holds both a Civil Law degree and a Common Law degree, and is a member of the Quebec and Ontario Bar. She is a frequent author on various topics, such as non-traditional marks, licensing and Quebec French language issues.
Brigitte is the recipient of the 2021 Order of Merit from the University of Ottawa, Civil Law Section, the highest distinction awarded by the faculty in recognition of her achievements. She is also a member of the Advisory Board of the 2022 and 2021 Canadian General Counsel Awards. She is Course Director of the 2022 and 2021 McGill / IPIC Trademark Course, and also lectures and acts as workshop leader during the course for a number of years.
Brigitte is also recognized in the 2022 and 2021 Best Lawyers directory in Canada, listed amongst the 2021 leading Trademark Professionals in the World Trademark Review 1000 and in the 2018 Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory.
She is fluent in English and French.
