Getting Around Toronto
The city's downtown streets follow a grid-like layout, making it easy for drivers and pedestrians alike to get around (drivers beware, though: some of the downtown streets are one way, so check a map ahead of time for the best directions). Toronto's public transit system, the TTC, operates subway, bus and streetcar lines around the city. For a map of the complete system, visit www.city.toronto.on.ca/ttc/pdf/rideguide.pdf, and for just the subway system, go to www.city.toronto.on.ca/ttc/pdf/subway_rt.pdf. One ride is $2.75 CDN and ten tokens can be purchased for $21.00.
As in most cities, traffic is heaviest between 7:30 and 9:30 in the morning, and between 4:00 and 7:30 in the evening, so be sure to budget extra time if you are driving between these times. You may also want to consider the subway as an efficient alternative, with trains running on each line every two to three minutes.
Taxis are abundant in Toronto, so within the downtown core cabs can be hailed from the street; calling ahead is rarely necessary. However, if you require a confirmed taxi ride, the following is a list of the major taxi companies in the city:
