Kevin Shipley

Kevin's practice focuses on patent prosecution with an emphasis on mechanical innovations.  Kevin also focuses on freedom to operate, patent infringement, and patent validity investigations, as well as advising on confidentiality agreements, patent licenses, and other IP-related agreements.

While obtaining his degree in mechanical engineering, Kevin completed an internship in the oil refining industry during which he focused on preventative maintenance and failure avoidance based on vibration analysis of rotating and reciprocating machinery.

Kevin currently serves as Chair of the Ontario Engineering Competition Advisory Board, and as a volunteer advisor with the Research, Innovation and Commercialization (RIC) Centre. He is also a member of the Intellectual Property Owners Association (IPO) IP Licensing Committee.

Kevin also speaks about patent and IP-related issues, including providing in-house education and training seminars for clients, and lecturing at the Western University Faculty of Engineering, the Richard Ivey School of Business, the Loyalist College and the Schulich School of Business.

Kevin was both a summer student and an articling student with Bereskin & Parr LLP.

Ontario Engineering Competition 2014

We are pleased to announce that Bereskin & Parr sponsored the Ontario Engineering Competition (OEC) as a Sustaining Major Patron. As a sponsor of this event for many years, members of the firm will be participating in a variety of areas. Kevin Shipley is Chair of the OEC Advisory Board, while Chris Bury and Reshika Dhir represented Bereskin & Parr as judges for the Innovative Design competition.

For over 30 years, the annual OEC has provided Ontario engineering students with academic challenges beyond the class room and has contributed to the development of both technical and "soft skills" required in modern, real-world engineering employment. Each year, over 200 students, selected from all accredited engineering programs in Ontario, compete against each other in a variety of technical and presentation based categories, with the winners of each category advancing to represent Ontario at the national Canadian Engineering Competition.

Canadian Engineering Competition 2014

Kevin Shipley, a member of Bereskin & Parr’s Mechanical & Industrial Processes practice group and Chair of the Ontario Engineering Competition Advisory Board, will be judging the Canadian Engineering Competition (CEC) 2014.  

Kevin has expertise in patents and mechanical innovations, and has spoken at several Ontario Universities about patent and IP-related issues, including at the Western University Faculty of Engineering, the Richard Ivey School of Business and the Schulich School of Business. 

The Canadian Engineering Competition (CEC) is a nationwide competition that gives Canadian undergraduate engineering students with the greatest knowledge of their program the opportunity to showcase their technical, communication and innovative skills in a variety of challenging competitions.  

Winners of the Ontario Engineering Competition, a firm sponsored event, will be moving on to the CEC to compete against winning students from other regional competitions across Canada, in competitions designed to mimic engineering practices experienced by the engineering profession including: Engineering Communication, Consulting Engineering, Extemporaneous Debate, Innovative Design, Junior Design, Senior Design and Re-Engineering.
