James W. Hinton

Jim is an intellectual property lawyer and patent and trademark agent with Bereskin & Parr LLP. He works with innovators to strategically protect their intellectual property rights in a wide range of technologies. Jim is a former research fellow with the Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI) where he examined international, transnational and domestic IP law within a practical and experiential context. Jim also teaches “Intellectual Property for Engineers”, a graduate Engineering course at Western University.

An experienced engineer, Jim has specialized in engineering design and project management in the automotive and the fiberglass manufacturing industries. He uses his technical experiences to help innovators, from local start-ups to large international corporations.

Jim was awarded the J.Edward Maybee Memorial Prize by the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada for having achieved the highest overall mark in the Patent Agent Qualifying Examinations. He holds a Juris Doctor from the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Law and a Bachelor of Engineering (mechanical) from McMaster University.
