Litigation/Trade Mark Assistant - Toronto

Bereskin & Parr is one of Canada's largest and most respected intellectual property ("IP") law firms. There is an immediate opportunity for a Litigation/Trade Mark Assistant to work at our Toronto location.  This position will be supporting one of the firm’s Partners who practices intellectual property litigation.

Responsibilities include:

Opening, maintaining, and closing client files (including conflict searching/clearance; organizing/maintaining large litigation files; etc.)

Independently preparing and sending correspondence (especially by email) reporting to clients

Creating first drafts of documents based on precedents (including litigation documents in Federal court and Ontario Superior court proceedings)

Preparing Trade Mark applications, amendments to applications, drafting statements of opposition, and related correspondence (with direction), and attending to filing

Maintaining and organizing precedents

Creating and revising correspondence, memos and other documents from dictation, hand written notes and/or oral instructions

Preparing status reports for clients (e.g. tables listing Trade Mark applications, and describing where each is in the prosecution process)

Reviewing, correcting pre-bills; assisting with billing; sending invoices by email

Requesting cheques, trust deposits, pre-bills, etc. from accounting department

Maintaining, updating and monitoring due date lists, and “to do” lists

Arranging for service of documents

Conducting research on the Internet (e.g. offending websites, information about individuals, client websites, court websites, CIPO, USPTO, legal database search sites, etc.)

Obtaining copies of decisions by courts, Registrar of Trade-marks

Working with members of litigation department (e.g. to prepare materials for use in court proceedings, which may be many volumes and thousands of pages in length)

Reading, sorting and prioritizing mail and providing appropriate information to enable action

Reviewing client instructions by phone, mail or email and taking appropriate action with direction from lawyer

Sending reminders to clients regarding upcoming deadlines

Ordering trade mark searches, corporate searches, working with searchers

Proofreading, photocopying, scanning, faxing, emailing, couriering, etc.

Qualifications include:

Strong ability to work productively with low level of supervision

Desire to learn, and acquire new skills over time

Aptitude for and interest in organization (i.e. physical file organization; electronic document organization; assisting with monitoring/managing due dates, delegated work, etc.)

Legal Assistant Diploma/Certificate or equivalent experience

3+ years of relevant working experience

Familiarity with Federal Court and Ontario Court procedure

Knowledge of Trade Marks, CIPO procedure, TMOB procedure

Computer literate with strong working knowledge of standard software (Word, Excel)

Strong problem solving skills

Strong communication skills (verbal and written)

Ability to function well under time pressure (e.g. to meet litigation due dates)
