Trademark Practice Group Assistant

There is currently an immediate opportunity for a TRADEMARK PRACTICE GROUP ASSISTANT in our Toronto location. This position is part of the Practice Group Support Department, whose primary function is to provide support to the practice of the trademark agents and lawyers of the Firm.

This role is an exciting opportunity for the right candidate to gain experience in and exposure to all facets of the trademark prosecution process. Our Trademark Practice Support Team is high functioning and well respected within Bereskin and Parr. If you have experience as a Trademark Assistant or Clerk and are interested in a professional and team oriented environment that encourages learning and wide spread exposure to trademarks, we are interested in speaking with you.

Responsibilities Include:

Drafting routine and complex correspondence and documents for review by the professionals (with minimal direction) such as:
  - Drafting trademark applications and revised applications; 
  - Drafting reporting letters to clients regarding issues that have been raised in examination and drafting and filing responses with CIPO (or instructions to foreign associates as applicable);
  - Drafting assignments, filing changes in title/name documents as well as reviewing confirmations for accuracy prior to reporting; and
  - Drafting correspondence related to the opposition process, including statements of opposition.
Conducting online research for various purposes using resources such as the CIPO database, the trademark databases in other jurisdictions and client websites.
Providing assistance to the post-examination clerks for Canadian and foreign jurisdictions, including: 
  - Proofreading and reporting advertisements;
  - Drafting and filing declarations of use and  extensions of time; and
  - Proofreading and reporting Registration Certificate
Provide assistance on special projects regarding trademark prosecution as well as coverage of other trademark support staff during vacation or leave periods. 
Other administrative duties as assigned by professionals, assistants and/or clerks.

Qualifications Include:

1-2 years of experience working in intellectual property is required.
3-5 years of administrative experience is an asset.
Strong knowledge of trademark and CIPO procedures and rules is required.
Post-secondary education such as Legal Assistant Diploma/Law Clerk Certificate or equivalent experience is an asset.
Strong communication skills (both verbal and written) including the ability to deal with clients, and all levels of staff.
Excellent time management and prioritization skills.
Strong attention to detail.
Computer literate with strong working knowledge of legal software and standard software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).                                                                     
Knowledge and understanding of docketing systems, exposure to Patricia an asset.
Strong interpersonal and problem solving skills.
