.CA Domain Names Available on First-Come, First Served Basis on or About November 1, 2000
The Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA) has recently announced that important new rules for the .ca registry will come into effect on or about November 1, 2000.
The current rules for the .ca (Canadian country code) registry allow an entity to register only one .ca domain name, and only if that entity has a Canadian presence. Under the new rules, qualifying individuals and entities will be able to register an unlimited number of .ca domain names on a first-come, first-served basis.
Entities such as Canadian federal or provincial companies, associations, trade unions, various non-profit organizations and Canadian citizens will be able to own an unlimited number of .ca domain names. Also, those entities which are currently limited to registering provincially-designated domain names (such as companyname.on.ca) will be entitled to register available second level domain names (such as companyname.ca).
In addition, non-Canadian registered trade mark owners will be eligible to register an unlimited number of .ca domain names which consist of, or include, the exact word component of their registered trade marks.
We strongly recommend that entities who are eligible to own .ca domain names under the new rules prepare to register important .ca domain names in advance of November 1, 2000, in order to preserve rights in their trade marks and company names and to prevent future disputes involving these domain names. Steps can now be taken to pre- book .ca domain names for registration under the new .ca domain name system.
