Profile

Mark Robbins is a partner with Bereskin & Parr.

Mark graduated with distinction from the University of Toronto where he obtained his B.A. with majors in English and philosophy. He then attended Queen’s University, and graduated in 1992 with a law degree. Mark articled with Bereskin & Parr and was called to the Ontario Bar in 1994.

Mark has practiced exclusively in the intellectual property field, particularly in trade marks, copyright and litigation, with an emphasis on trade mark protection and enforcement issues including trade mark infringement, passing off and oppositions.

Mark has been actively involved with the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada (IPIC) and has assisted in organizing, moderating, and presenting numerous IPIC educational seminars, and general meetings. He has also written and contributed to articles published in Canada and the United States on intellectual property topics.

Mark regularly appears before the Trade-marks Opposition Board and in Federal and Ontario court proceedings concerning trade mark and copyright matters. He also has been involved as co-counsel in a number of leading trade mark cases concerning, the rights of foreign trade mark owners in Canada (eg. Enterprise Rent-A-Car Company v. Singer), trade mark infringement on internet websites (eg. Imax v. Showmax; Weight Watchers v. Vale), and challenges to the rights of public authorities and universities to control the use of certain words and marks (eg. Piscitelli v. LCBO) in Canada.

Aside from client work, Mark also supervises the firm’s library system. When not practicing law, Mark enjoys sports, including tennis, hockey, and “ultimate”.
