Profile
Jill Jarvis-Tonus is a partner with Bereskin & Parr.
Jill graduated from the University of Windsor with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in dramatic arts. After three years of pursuing a career in theatre and film, Jill changed career paths and attended Osgoode Hall Law School of York University where she obtained her law degree in 1985. She then articled with Bereskin & Parr, returning as an associate after her call to the Ontario Bar in 1987.
Jill's practice focuses on copyright and trade mark matters, including trade mark and copyright registration, trade mark oppositions, assignments of rights, due diligence work, and licensing, particularly in the entertainment, publishing and software industries. She also handles opinions, litigation support and the review of and advice on copyright policy and legislative change. In recent years, Jill has increasingly worked on copyright and trade mark matters relating to new media products and internet services, including the drafting of website agreements and other internet related contracts, the selection and protection of domain names, advising on the infringement of copyrights and trade marks on the internet and privacy law concerns.
She is a member of the Copyright Legislation Committee of the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada ("IPIC") and has written several papers on copyright as it applies to the use of photographs, archival materials and third party content on the internet, and the creation of multimedia products and internet services. She is a frequent speaker at legal conferences on copyright law and reforms and has lectured at the McGill Copyright course offered through the IPIC.
Jill retains her deep love for theatre and the entertainment industry as well as books and the publishing field.
