Profile

Isis Caulder is a partner at Bereskin & Parr.

Isis is a registered patent agent in Canada and the United States. She obtained a B.A.Sc. degree in Engineering Science (Electrical Option) with honours standing, and an M.A.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Toronto under an NSERC scholarship. She conducted post-graduate research in the field of algebraic control systems and then worked briefly in the power engineering and telecommunications industries. Isis received a law degree from the University of Toronto where she was awarded the McCarthy, Tetrault Prize for academic excellence and the Bereskin & Parr Prize in Intellectual Property. She was called to the Bar in 1997.

Isis' practice is focused primarily on helping high technology clients secure and license patent rights for a wide variety of electrical and computer related inventions including video image processing software, audio signal processing hardware, space communications hardware, wireless communications software and hardware, data encryption and compression software, integrated circuit devices, biometric devices and electronic consumer products. She also works with clients to obtain and license trade marks, copyrights and industrial designs and advises on strategic intellectual property portfolio development and management.

Isis regularly writes and speaks on topics such as "Patented in Canada - Practical Prosecution Strategies and Tips" (AIPLA paper, October 2002 - Updated November 2007), "Strategies for Structuring and Implementing an IP Management Plan" (INFONEX paper, January 2003), “Software and Business Method Patents - The Latest Developments" (Seventh Annual Canadian IT Law Association Conference paper, October 2003 - Updated December 2007) and "Intellectual Property Due Diligence" (Osgoode Continuing Education Program paper, November 2005). Isis also writes a regular column on intellectual property law for the Canadian Electronics magazine, edits the firm's Software/High Technology Newsletter and is a regular contributor to the Waterloo Technology Startup Network website (www.watstart.ca). Isis is an active member of the Professional Programs Committee and a member of the Electronic and Computer Law Committee of the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA). She is also a member of the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) committee of the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada (IPIC) and the Software and Business Methods Committee of the Intellectual Property Owners Association (IPO).
