Profile

Stephen Beney is a partner with Bereskin & Parr and practices out of the firm's Mississauga office.

Stephen completed a Specialist Programme in physics at the University of Toronto, receiving his B.Sc. in 1982. This programme has given Stephen a background not only in electromagnetic fields and waves, circuit analysis, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, nuclear physics, solid-state physics, and laser theory, but also applied maths and computer science.

Stephen serves a wide range of clients. His practice includes the preparation and prosecution of patent applications in the mechanical, electro-mechanical, electrical, software, and electronics fields. His advice extends to intellectual property management and strategic planning; what to patent and where to patent. He has also prepared many patentability opinions, as well as infringement and validity opinions.

Stephen is very active with the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada (IPIC) and has contributed extensively to patent education in Canada. Stephen has been a lecturer and a tutor since 2001 for the annual IPIC/McGill University Patent Course, and was Assistant Programme Director for the 2001 edition of the course and Programme Director for the 2002 edition of the course. Stephen has also served as a tutor from 2000 to 2003 with the IPIC Committee that provides annual patent agent training sessions. Stephen also currently serves as an IPIC Councilor.

Stephen served as a Member of the Patent Agents Examining Board from 2004 to 2007.
